My most thankful patients are the ones that were told by multiple other doctors that they needed an amputation of their leg and we were able to salvage the limb. But I must admit that it takes a team approach to limb salvage. If the cause is due to a diabetic foot infection, it usually requires an excellent Internal Medicine doctor, Vascular Surgeon, Infectious Disease doctor and a Podiatrist with experience in saving limbs. Unfortunately, saving a leg sometimes requires amputating necrotic and infected toes or even a partial foot amputation. The sooner a patient visits the office with a diabetic wound, the more likely chance we have of preserving the entire foot.
